Aquarium Field Trip

I didn't attend the aquarium field trip however I found the octopus very interesting to talk about. The octopus is from the Kingdom Animalia and belongs to the phylum Mollusca and class Cephalopoda. The octopus belongs to the phylum cephalopoda because it means head-foot and the octopus has no mid-section but its head and its eight tentacles. The octopus have suckers on each of there tentacles to grab things or get hold of prey. The octopus also have an ink sac which is filled with ink and they use it when there are being attacked by prey. I find the octopus very interesting because they are different then most sea creatures to me because, they can change colour to match there surroundings to hide from prey and if they are found they always have there ink sac.

Arthropod- Hoverfly

The arthropod I chose is the hoverfly. I chose the hoverfly because I found it quite interesting. The hoverfly also known as the flower fly or syrphrid fly are from the insect family Syrphidae. The adult hoverflys feed mainly on nectar and pollen while the maggots which are known as the larvae eat a wide range of foods. Some maggots eat on dead and decaying plant or animal matter which are known as saprotrophs. Hoverflies are a very important pollinators for flowering plants all over the world. The hoverfly is an arthropod because it has an exoskeleton, a segmented body and joint appendages. Some interesting facts about the hoverfly is that they can have spots, bands or , stripes on their body. They are very fast fliers which makes it harder to spot them and tell them apart from a bee, and they are among  the biggest bugs in Central Europe.

Here is a picture of the hoverfly life cycle.

Squid Dissection

This is a labelled picture of the squid we dissected in class last week. One thing I found interesting about the squid dissection was when we removed the gills and placed them in a little glass bowl filled with water when we placed them in they looked liked feathers. Which was quiet fascinating. When cut open on the inside we took out the ink sac and the pen and when we were done the dissection we wrote with the ink from , the ink sac using the pen .. as a pen. This was one dissection I enjoyed it wasn't very pleasant or appealing to look at but it was fun.
